All-electric machines in scientific applications

All-electric machines in scientific applications

Сase studies

A close connection between industrial research and teaching is an important factor for future successful projects. KraussMaffei supports this notion, providing the Darmstadt Institute for Plastics Technology (or "ikd," from German "Institut fur Kunststofftechnik Darmstadt") with a PX 160 featuring an LRX 100 linear robot for research and development tasks. On June 29th, the all-electric injection molding machine was handed over in a ceremony held as part of the 15th Darmstadt Plastics Day.

PX from the latest generation
The PX 160 features a clamping force of 1600 kN and belongs to the latest generation of the all-electric PX series from KraussMaffei. "Our PX series stands out for its high precision along with its high versatility in configuration, production and in retrofitting. This makes the series ideal for applications in research and teaching, where product or mold changes are frequently required, for example," explains Jochen Mitzler, Director of Market Intelligence and Management IMM at KraussMaffei.

The new PX 160 at the Darmstadt Institute for Plastics Technology is part of the TechCenter. It is meant to be available primarily to students and industry partners for ongoing research projects. "The new PX 160 from KraussMaffei is making a significant contribution to improving teaching.

Since the institute places a great deal of value on providing students with real-world training, it is extremely important for the quality of our teaching that we have injection molding machines from the latest series," adds Prof. Thomas Schroder of ikd.

 More about ikd
The Institute for Plastics Technology at Hochschule Darmstadt focuses heavily on rheology, generative manufacturing processes, material development, compounding, injection molding and extrusion in both its research and teaching. Furthermore, ikd is home to an accredited test lab where all known test processes for analyzing plastics are available. Current research projects in the injection molding field deal with the areas of hot runner design for high-cavity molds, in-line rheometry for injection molding and developing lightweight construction concepts.
