DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers, a global business unit of the DowDuPont Specialty Products Division (future DuPont), was introducing its new glass- and carbon-reinforced 3D printing filaments at Formnext 2018. Building on the ultra-low shrinkage technology of DuPont™ Zytel® specialty nylons for 3D printing, these new grades address the industry needs for stiffer and stronger materials, similar in that sense to existing reinforced injection moulding grades, and without compromising easy printability, smoothness and surface quality.
At Formnext 2018, DuPont unveiled two new grades which will be made available at resellers as of January 2019:
• Zytel® 3D12G30FL BK309, a black heat-stabilized 30% glass-reinforced polyamide with a modulus of 4-5GPA and a heat deflection temperature of >150 C, resistant to most solvents, cleaning agents, automotive fluids and fuels at room temperature.
• Zytel® 3D10C20FL BK544, a black 20% carbon fiber reinforced polyamide for lightweight components with a modulus of 4-5GPA and a heat deflection temperature of >150 C, resistant to most solvents, cleaning agents, automotive fluids and fuels at room temperature.
These two new grades were featured in live printing demos on the X400 and X500 3D printers of DuPont’s partner, GermanRepRap.
The expansion of DuPont high-performance materials into 3D printing enables users to achieve greater design freedom, lightweighting, and reduced product development cycles, allowing for rapid prototyping, easier part production, tooling and customization.
“To follow these trends, our industrial customers need 3D printing materials that offer similar formulation, mechanical and chemical properties as our well-known injection moulding grades. These new glass- and carbon-reinforced 3D filaments are a new step in that direction to help the industry move towards cost-efficient, automated and larger scale production”, said Ernst Poppe, New Business Development Manager, DuPont.
