New headquarters and 70 new professionals

News 12.02.2021

3D printing is in the process of international emergence. This technology is the cornerstone of the new industrial revolution and more and more companies are incorporating it into their production or design process. The Catalan company BCN3D, a spin-off of the CIM UPC, has managed to gain a foothold in this emerging business and closed 2020 with record growth that has led to doubling the workforce.

Specifically, the 3D printer manufacturing company has hired 70 more professionals in the last year, reaching 150 employees. To cope with its expansion and have more productive space, the company has just opened a new headquarters in Gavà. Over the last year, BCN3D has launched a new generation of machinery for additive manufacturing and expanded its international network of distributors, allowing it to export its printers to sixty countries. Among its main clients are Seat, BMW, Camper and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona, which use their 3D printers to prototype, functionally validate and manufacture tools, templates and accessories.

To finance this growth, the firm closed a capital increase of 2.8 million euros in 2020. This investment was led by the Basque industrial group Mondragón and the CDTI (National Innovation Agency), together with Accurafy4, JME Venture Capital and Danobatgroup. Since its inception in 2019, BCN3D has raised resources of 5.5 million and is an example of technology and business transfer that emerged within a university research group, in this case the CIM UPC, a technology center that wants to be a world reference in the field of additive manufacturing.

“The year 2020 was an exciting year for BCN3D as we continue to capitalize on our market opportunities and successfully execute our aggressive growth targets. I hope that the growth of our business continues to accelerate in 2021”, assures the CEO of BCN3D, Xavier Martínez Faneca.
