SPE launches new design conference with a focus on injection molding

News 20.09.2016

The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) has created a new technical conference focusing on plastics design. Titled “Successful Plastic Part Design – Doing It Right the First Time,” the first conference will take place October 25-26, 2016 in Portland, OR at McMenamins Kennedy School.

SPE’s Product Design and Development Division, known as PD3, organized the conference in collaboration with the Society’s Columbia River Section and the SPE Thermoforming Division. Presentations will be offered in two tracks:

Injection Molding

  • Overview of Injection Molding – Charlie O’Bosky, R&D Plastics
  • Injection Molding Process & Terminology – Ron Knowlton, Western Washington University
  • Polymers and Material Selection -– Ron Knowlton
  • Injection Molding Flaws – Kyle Tarr, R&D Plastics
  • Design Guidelines – Kyle Tarr and Rod Roth, R&D Plastics
  • Design for Manufacturing Considerations – Ron Knowlton
  • Mold Design and Construction - Ron Knowlton
  • Post Molding Processes – Charlie O’Bosky
  • Product Development Flowchart – Charlie O’Bosky

Composites/Thermoforming

  • Why Use Thermoforming with Process Overview of Vacuum, Pressure and Twin-Sheet Forming – Ed Probst, Probst Plastics Consulting
  • Material Selection for Thermoforming – Ed Probst
  • Design for Thermoforming – Ed Probst
  • Thermoforming Tooling & Troubleshooting – Ed Probst
  • What Are Composites, Their History and What Makes Them Special – Trevor Grundberg, Vectorply
  • Where Are Composites Typically Used and Part Design for Composites – Trevor Grundberg
  • Part Design for Composites and Process Modeling – Trevor Grundberg

Plenary speaker presentations addressing all three processes will also be offered:

  • How Do You Select the Right Process? – Eric Larson, Art of Mass Production
  • Where to Find Answers to Your Plastics Questions – Ed Probst

SPE chose to hold our new design conference in the city of Portland because of its educational resources and its ties to and appreciation for process and design,” said Ed Probst, conference chair. “We are bringing together the area’s part designers, engineers, and material specifiers to explore the design and process essentials for injection molding, thermoforming and composites.”
