LATI has officially obtained BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification for one of its Italian-made flame-retardant polypropylene (PP)-based compounds, classified UL94 V0.
This achievement marks a strategic milestone in strengthening LATI’s presence in India, supporting the export of compounds produced in Italy.

What is BIS certification and why does it matter?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards and certification authority, responsible for defining product standards and verifying compliance to ensure that both imported and locally manufactured goods meet the country’s quality and safety requirements.
BIS certification is mandatory for an ever-growing list of materials and components, including polymer compounds, and guarantees:
• Unrestricted access to the Indian market with no customs barriers
• Trust from local customers and stakeholders
• Compliance with the quality and safety standards established by the Indian government
As of October 24, 2025, BIS certification has also become mandatory for PP-based compounds, following the same path as other materials in previous years.
A rigorous process successfully completed
Obtaining BIS certification is far from a mere administrative step — it’s a complex and demanding process. LATI took on this challenge in collaboration with Octagona, a consulting firm specialized in internationalization and market access, with deep expertise in the Indian context.
The certification journey required coordinated efforts across several areas: meticulous preparation of technical and administrative documentation with support from Octagona’s Italian-Indian team; a three-day audit conducted at LATI’s production plant in Italy by an Indian inspector; and the testing of material samples in accredited laboratories in India, all of which met the required standards.
Only after successfully completing all these stages did LATI receive the BIS-ISI license, authorizing the company to mark every single unit sold in India with the official conformity symbol.
According to Alessio Portentoso, Group Sales Director at LATI, this certification demonstrates LATI’s ability to meet even the most stringent requirements of non-EU markets:
“The bureaucratic complexity and costs associated with these certifications often discourage many European companies from proceeding, thus missing significant business opportunities in India. For LATI, however, this country represents an extraordinary growth opportunity.”
A long-term strategy: local production and full compliance
Beyond direct exports from Italy, in 2025 LATI strengthened its industrial footprint in India through a partnership with LOXIM, giving rise to LATI-LOXIM Thermoplastics Private Limited.
With a production plant located in Sanand, Gujarat, and a 20 kton annual capacity, LATI-LOXIM has become a key player in the local production of high-performance technical compounds tailored to the growing needs of the Indian market, in full compliance with both national and international standards.
The BIS certification further consolidates this industrial strategy, positioning LATI as a reliable and competitive partner, both for major international OEMs already operating in India and for local manufacturers seeking flame-retardant and specialty compounds that meet Bureau of Indian Standards requirements.
