Advancing circular material solutions for automotive applications

News 08.06.2026

Toyota Motor Europe presented the award at its Annual Business Meeting May 7, 2026, in Belgium. The company recognized LYB innovation and long-term collaboration to develop postconsumer recycled (PCR) polymer solutions made from end-of-life fishing nets. Toyota plans to incorporate the materials into future vehicles, supporting sustainability goals while maintaining high performance and quality standards.

“This recognition is an honor for our teams,” said Frank Noeltgen, vice president of Advanced Polymer Solutions Europe at LYB. “Toyota sets a high bar for innovation and engineering excellence, and we’re proud to support an OEM of this caliber. Developing circular solutions takes persistence, technical rigor and trusted collaboration, and we value our partnership with Toyota as we continue to drive progress together.”

Over the past two years, LYB teams worked closely with Toyota to plan, evaluate and validate PCR-based materials derived from end-of-life fishing nets recovered from maritime environments. The teams conducted extensive testing and performance evaluations to ensure the materials meet the rigorous requirements of automotive applications.

This collaboration demonstrates the LYB ability to translate complex waste streams into high-value materials that support circularity at scale. By combining materials science expertise with customerfocused development, LYB enables more sustainable vehicle design without compromising safety, durability or quality. Looking ahead, LYB will support the development of Toyota's end-of-life vehicles through the LYB closed-loop preparation center, helping return recovered materials to new applications.

LYB Advanced Polymer Solutions develops polypropylene compounds for automotive bumpers, instrument panels, and interior trim, focusing on lightweight, sustainable materials that deliver premium aesthetics while meeting industry performance standards. As a trusted global supplier in polymer compounding, masterbatch, and color technologies, LYB supports manufacturers and brand owners with consistent quality, advanced solutions, and strong technical expertise to bring their ideas to life.
