Collaboration boosts resin transfer moulding process efficiency

Collaboration boosts resin transfer moulding process efficiency

News 02.02.2017
Fill machine engineering 06

A collaboration between Fill Machine Engineering, Airbus and Aachen University’s Institute for Plastics Processing in Industry (Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung - IKV) has created a method to shorten the resin transfer moulding process by placing sensors in injection technology for the first time.

The new approach aims to dispense with the need to equip every forming tool with costly sensors, simultaneously measuring data recorded during injection to enable future on-line control of processes.

The adaptive injection unit injects resin using non-refillable cartridges in the same way as a piston injection system. The unit connects to the forming tool with a toggle clamping mechanism. A sensor for in-line measurement of quality and process-relevant parameters is installed between the forming tool and the injector piston, measuring temperature, pressure, the viscosity of the resin system, the cross-link density of the resin system, and the glass transition temperature.

Austrian specialist machine builder Fill has worked with IKV and the German Research Foundation (DFG) to make available the system’s technology on request.
